An investigation has been launched by Jersey's environment department after hundreds of litres of diesel were found in a stream in St Ouen.

The stream leads to the Val de la Mar reservoir which is the second largest in the island.

At the moment, there is no evidence that any local wildlife has been harmed but it has also spilt into an environmentally sensitive area.

The area in St Ouen's Bay is close to a protected area for birds.

The oil was spilt into the stream on Friday afternoon. Booms and mats around the canal were added to prevent more oil from getting in.

Jersey Water said the oil would not affect water supplies to islanders.

A spokesperson for the National Trust for Jersey, which oversees the environment sites in St Ouen's Bay, said it was too early to say what the effect on wildlife would be.
