Police crack down on litter Empty Police crack down on litter

Post by GD Mon 13 Feb 2012, 9:45 pm

Guernsey Police have formally reported 34 people for littering offences in the last week.

They will all be sent official warning letters.

It comes on the back of stepped up efforts by the Police to respond to complaints over litter.

A spokesman for the police said: "It is an offence to cause litter, and in an attempt to break some peoples habit, the Guernsey Police have been recently issuing warnings and advising individuals and businesses regarding this growing problem."

"Working together with a range of departments and organisations, we hope that the people get the message that littering our island either deliberately or carelessly is unacceptable."

Instant on the spot fines would be far better...

They cant be everywhere .litter is a huge problem that once they educate folks it will cost the island less money to keep it clean
i get very embarrassed by the amount of litter that visitors face when they spend money coming here to visit the beautiful island . i cna only pick up a certain amount of it when walking .
The pet problem can be solved instant.. if folks refuse to give thier pets up they LOVE.

You're right, the pets problem could be solved very quickly and easily if the police put their mind to it and left the litter problem to the parish constables.

Not the parish Constable but those who would be paid for this job. We have two Constables in St Peter Port who work very hard for many hours unpaid as do many of the Constables of the island .

Pass the necessary by-laws and pay the Parish Constables to enforce them through the civil courts. It's your Island and, unlike the UK, you do not need anybody elses permission to run it as you see fit.

This applies to a lot of things which are going on in Guernsey these days.

Too many English rules here now and too many outsiders running the island
Guernsey folks are a small perportion of the island now .and many do not understand the laws .
they need updating but need someone that will take it though the courts with out is getting thrown out
this is why no one had been fined yet .and the law officers who have the final say has not given the go ahead to take it any futher.

What outsiders are running the Island ? Are you saying that some of the States members are outsiders ? OK but you voted for them.

How can Guersey folk be a small porportion of the population when the majority were born in the Island.

I assume Law Officers are your equivilent of our Crown Prosecution Service, are they ? Where are they from ?

They don't make the laws do they. The States do that and get them ratified by the Queen. Law Officers presumably just administer them.

All said and done it is still your Island, so it must be for yourselves to set it up as you wish it to be.

kat is talking about true guernsey people ..the families that have been here for hundreds of years.. a true guernseyman has a stamp in his/her passport that doesnt allow them to work in an eu country without a work permit..imo that is true dicrimination.there was even a case several years ago when the uk tried to stop a guernsey woman from working there ..she won the case .

Time to take umbrage, so one can not be a "true" Guernseyman unless they have THE STAMP. What a load of bollocks, THE STAMP only denotes that because Guernsey is not part of the EU and you have no parents born in an EU country you are not entitled to work in the EU. I am happy to stand corrected on this. I actually feel insulted by the comment.

THE STAMP has become a bit of an elitist thing, "I'm a true Guern your not" sort of thing. I do not have a stamp but my heritage from one side goes back donkeys years. So I would be very careful how the "TRUE GUERNSEYMAN" phrase is used.
