MUG - new charity to raise cancer awareness
A new charity is encouraging men to keep themselves checked for cancer.
Male Uprising in Guernsey - MUG - aims to raise awareness about male prostate, testicular and bowel cancer.
The charity is taking its cue from Pink Ladies - a similar group set up to encourage women to check for breast cancer.
MUG chairman Trevor Kelham says their main aim is to support men and their families, who are affected by male cancers. They are hoping to raise £250,000 over the next three years. The money will go towards research, increasing awareness, treatments and providing support.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK, with one man diagnosed every 15 minutes.
MUG trustees include Tony Tostevin (managing director of The Partnership), Gavin Ferguson (managing partner at Appleby) and Ian Brown (owner of Ian Browns Cycles).
The organisation will keep close contact with the UK based Prostate Cancer Charity and medical staff in Guernsey.
