It is a sport we usually associate with the Royal and the rich, but now, it is hoped that Beach polo could bring rich benefits to Jersey.

A beach polo tournament at St Brelade's beach was announced today.

It will take place in September.

The law was changed earlier this year to allow horses on the beach in the summer so the event can go ahead.

Local businesses and restaurants say it will give them a big boost.

Beach Polo Player, Caroline Mair said: "There are three players in each team as opposed to four in grass polo, but other than that the rules are the same as grass polo, very exhilarating, very fast and exciting."

Organisers hope it will bring big crowds, and that local businesses can capitalise on that.

One hotel already has 20 rooms booked for that weeknd, and restaurants hope it will bring people through their doors.

Robert Jones, pushed for the law to be changed so that horses can be on the beach in the summer.

He said: "It's about positioning St Brelade's Bay - it's already recognised as one of the most beautiful and best beaches in the UK, if not in Europe, and the rest of the world, so it's about underpinning that.
"We have businesses here that we want to support and create a unique difference every year."

While tickets will be sold, you will also be able to see the event if you head down to the Bay.
