New treated water storage tanks will give Alderney "cleaner water", according to the States Engineer.

The States installed two tanks near the airport to create a larger emergency capacity and to allow for water storage facilities to be regularly cleaned.

Currently treated water is stored in a World War II bunker built by the German occupying forces, which has been used for more than 40 years.

Julie Turner said the new tanks would give islanders better quality water.

She said: "The biggest problem with the bunker is that it only gives us four hours supply during the summer period."

She added: "If the supply gets cut for some reason, a pipe breakage or a major leakage, we've really only got four hours of backup water before we start to have serious problems."

Ms Turner said the water would be cleaner, and would need less added chlorine once the new tanks were installed.
