New Look UK fashion store may replace Woolworths Jersey
JERSEY’S Woolworths store will close after Christmas and is likely to be replaced by fashion retailer New Look.
A total of 88 full and part-time staff were yesterday told that the store, which has been based in King Street since 1922, will shut before 5 January. No specific date for closure has yet been decided.
It is understood that during yesterday’s meeting staff were told that New Look, which has a branch in Guernsey, has bought the lease for the two-storey shop. And the outgoing Woolworths staff will be given priority for the vacant positions at New Look, which is likely to open in the early spring.
It is believed that the clothes store made the decision to give priority to the Woolworths workers after sending a mystery shopper into the store to assess staff performance several weeks ago. Sources close to Woolworths have said that the fashion retailer bought the lease earlier this week, although New Look has refused to confirm whether it plans to open in the Island.
