Sunday Trading is now the time? Empty Sunday Trading is now the time?

Post by GD Thu 05 Feb 2009, 1:59 pm

With things being "tight" should Sunday trading be allowed?

Sunday trading laws could be changed to allow shops on Jersey to open on the Sunday after Liberation day.

Politicians are expected to debate the issue, which would require a change to Sunday trading laws, before the summer.

The news follows a request by Constable of St Helier, Simon Crowcroft, to allow shops to trade on Liberation Day.

Following opposition from the public, he is now suggesting shops be allowed to open on the Sunday after Liberation Day instead.

Liberation Day is on 9 May every year when Islands remembers and celebrates the liberation of the island from Nazi occupation.

Normally Jersey's Sunday trading laws force many shops to remain closed.

Don't know what the Guernsey States are going to do, but is not time that the Sunday trading laws were changed and allow certain times of trading in the Islands similar to the UK

The floor is now open for debate...

Thistle - now I don't work the only way I know which day of the week it is - is by using 'no shopping day' as my reference start point LOL
Seriously though I think it should be a matter of choice - I am sure my grandmama told me it was a religious point in Guernsey and if this is still true then it is imposing a religious view on people who are not of that denomination!!!! (not going to say which religion for fear of treading on toes Shocked ) But as long as the shops want to and the staff are allowed to choose yay or nay - why not!!!!

P.S. I don't know about other people - but I am still trained to buy my petrol before Sunday!!!! old habits and all that !!!!!
