‘St Saviours Ritz’ plans rejected
- FORMER St Saviour’s Tavern locals are petitioning Tom Scott to save their parish pub.
‘The Ritz’ was closed in 2006 and bought by Mr Scott to turn into residential units. As part of the plans, a bar was included in the development. However, drinkers were upset to discover that the latest proposals do not now include a bar.
A group of former regulars have started a petition, which appears in today’s Guernsey Press, asking islanders to support their cause.
Corinne Connolly, 47, is behind the campaign.
‘I’ve been drinking there for about 20 years,’ she said. ‘My dad used to come here when he was a teenager as well.
‘The first time it was going to close we fought as much as we could and got another two years’ grace. But we were told there would always be a bar, no matter what. These people want their local pub.’
St Saviour’s Tavern is the only hostelry left in the parish. It was established in 1842, when it was the St Saviour’s Hotel.
It was falling into disrepair, which was partly behind the reason for its closure, because it was not profitable to carry out the refurbishments(from thsisguernsey)
Cannot see Mr Scott changing his mind...

After many years of going downhill, unfortunately enough, i too can't see The Ritz ever opening again. I have many good (& bad) memories of the pub.
It is a shame for the very few who used it, and perhaps, had more people used it more often, it may have been financially worth keeping it open.

Re: ‘St Saviours Ritz’ plans rejected
FORMER Environment minister David De Lisle has spoken out against the latest plans for St Saviour’s Tavern.
Recent proposals for The Ritz do not include a bar, as the original plans had done.
Deputy De Lisle said he has sent a representation to the Environment Department about the importance of a parish pub.
‘This location had provided an important social venue and meeting place for parishioners,’ he said.
‘Without it people are left without a bar in walking distance from their properties in an area that has become quite densely populated.(from thisisguernsey)

As much as I like a pint it takes more than hal a dozen regulars to keep a pub viable.

Re: ‘St Saviours Ritz’ plans rejected
A REJECTED planning application to turn St Saviour’s Tavern into flats has been welcomed by the members of a group who have been campaigning to save their local pub.
Corinne Connolly from Start, which is hoping to bring back the tavern to its former glory or restore the bar to the building, has welcomed the news.
Plans for the former tavern, which was sold in 2007, originally included a bar but the recent application had removed it.
‘It’s very good news. I’m just so happy with the outcome,’ said Mrs Connolly.
She said the presentation Start - which stands for Support Tradition and Restore Tavern - had made to Deputy Peter Sirett, along with the 422-strong petition they had given him, had been worthwhile.
‘Everyone I have spoken to about it has said well done and keep up the good work - it’s just brilliant.
Mrs Connolly added that the campaign would not be giving up just yet.
‘We see it as a positive step forward,’ she said. (from thisisguernsey)
Lets hope they get their way, but somehow I doubt it..
