'Legal' highs to become illegal
The decision to ban some drugs known as "legal" highs in Jersey has been praised by the deputy health officer.
From Monday new laws in the island will make some of the substances controlled drugs, and it will be an offence to import, possess or supply them.
BZP will become a class C controlled drug and a range of cannabinoid-like substances, such as those found in the product Spice, will be class B.
Dr Susan Turnball said: "This decision is most welcome."
Logical step
Deputy Anne Pryke, the health minister, has made the two orders under the island's Misuse of Drugs Law.
She said: "I am delighted that Jersey is leading the way in tackling this relatively new concern."
Dr Turnbull told BBC News: "It's no surprise that these products have a similar range of side effects and harms to the illegal drugs they are designed to copy.
"Bringing these harmful substances under the control of our Misuse of Drugs Law is the logical next step now that it looks like they are at least as harmful, if not more so, than the illegal drugs they mimic." (from BBC)
