Feral chicken must go
Feral chickens which have established a flock near the entrance of Alderney's airport are causing a health hazard.
That's the view of the General Services Committee which has voted to have the poultry removed.
The committee says the birds pose a threat to water quality in the Bonne Terre catchment area.
It's hoped the birds can be found new homes, but if not they will be culled. But the authorities will have a fight on their hands. A petition opposed to culling was started on Friday afternoon and already a hundred people have signed it. The petition is at Le Cocq's Stores at Braye.
Meanwhile poultry keepers are being asked to stop releasing unwanted birds into the wild and islanders are being asked to stop feeding feral chicken.
The chicken have become an established part of the local scenery and a sign which has appeared on the site indicates the fowls do have friends. (from CI Tv)
