Mines Awareness Trust to close
The Mines Awareness Trust in Guernsey is to close.
For 11 years the Trust has been saving lives and limbs, by clearing areas strewn by mines, in wartorn countries across the world.
But unlike similar charities MAT receives no funding from government, and can no longer afford to run its operations.
Founder Ben Remfrey says the closure is "a sign of the times we are in".
MAT has worked in Kosovo, Sri Lanka, The Democratic republic of Congo, Angola, the Sudan, Kenya, Zimbabwe and Afghanistan.
It was featured at the Mine Free World Summit in Colombia last year for being pivotal in helping Rwanda reach Landmine Impact free status one year ahead of its obligations.
MAT was voted the Best Medium Sized Business in the Guernsey Awards for Achievement in 2007. (from CTV)
