Britain is set to shiver in temperatures as low as minus ten this week with 'significant' snow falls hitting the country, the Met Office warn.The last time the mercury plummeted this low was in March - at the summit of a Scottish mountain.The north and the east of the country are in line for heavy snow, although forecasters say this could spread across Britain as we head to the weekend.

For the start of the week temperatures will be average, with daytime highs of seven or eight Celsius.But as December nears this will fall, with a north easterly wind battering the coast and bringing showers with it. Rural parts of the country could see overnight temperatures as low a -10C, said Met Office forecast Alex Fox.He said: 'The last time temperatures reached that low was on the night of the 9th and 10th of March this year at the top of Braemar, a mountain in Scotland that's 1,000ft above sea level. That gives us an idea of how cold things are going to get.'With these conditions there's an increased chance we could see snow, especially in northern and eastern parts of the country.

At the moment temperatures are about average but over the next few days this will definitely get colder. 'We will still see showers, although not heavy rain, on Monday and Tuesday in some parts of the country. Heavy snow is predicted across the country this week in what could be the first major snowfall of the winter, forecasters have warned.
Temperatures will drop and snow showers are expected in parts of eastern England, Scotland and Wales during the next couple of days.
Up to 10cm (4in) of snow could fall in hilly areas, with 2-5cm of snow settling in localised patches inland, including the East Midlands, central Scotland and north-west Wales.

Icy roads: The Met Office has issued a weather advisory for heavy snow across the country this week in what could be the first major fall of the winter
A cold north-easterly wind will bring snow showers from the North Sea, with sleet and rain expected in coastal areas.
By tomorrow night, forecasters at MeteoGroup say there will be a covering of snow in northern Scotland, which could spread to the rest of the country by the weekend.
The Met Office has issued a weather advisory for heavy snow elsewhere later in the week, saying that a build-up of low pressure could draw snow showers across England.
Most at risk are the Scottish Highlands, Yorkshire and north-east England, where blizzards and heavy snowfall have been predicted.
Areas of Birmingham, Shropshire and Hertfordshire are less likely to experience snow showers.
By the end of the week there may be moderate snow throughout the UK, although this will remain heaviest in Scotland, Orkney and the Shetland Isles.

The early taste of winter will be accompanied by a sharp drop in temperatures and the return of overnight frosts across most of the UK, as well as fog and ice.
Temperatures will fall to 2C in inland parts of England and Wales, sinking to minus 3C and minus 4C in some places, and the rest of the country will experience a sub-zero chill by tomorrow night.
The cold weather means the snow is likely to settle on the ground, leading to a risk of ice on untreated surfaces.
The Met Office has warned that icy stretches are predicted on Thursday morning, and motorists should take extra care to avoid accidents due to the difficult weather conditions.
Chief forecaster at the Met Office Eddie Carroll said: 'The cold weather is clearly on its way this week and the public are advised to stay up to date with the forecast to make sure they have the latest information regarding the coming weather.
'Drivers are reminded that they should carry out simple vehicle checks before they set out, carry a severe weather emergency kit in their vehicles, monitor the traffic and weather conditions, and plan their journeys.'

Snow continues to disrupt the Channel Islands

Guernsey and Alderney took the brunt of last night's snow showers.

A decision to close all schools and colleges in Guernsey was made just after 6am this morning.

Transport around the Bailiwicks is still severely disrupted, Guernsey Airport was closed until just after 11:00 am and Island Coachways are offering a limited service.

I was out at 5;30 this morning , yes there was a little bit of snow in places but cancel schools , was this a bit of over precautions ?
