A*! Alderney State school outperforms Guernsey Empty A*! Alderney State school outperforms Guernsey

Following last week's GCSE debate, we can reveal that Alderney's only State school is outperforming those in Guernsey.

Figures published this week show that pupils in the northern isle are benefiting from smaller class sizes and increased parental support.

GCSE pupils at St Annes School are outperforming their peers in Guernsey.

56% scored at least five A*-C grades, including English and maths - better than Guernsey's overall score of 51%.

It is also significantly higher than each of Guernsey's high schools, whose results were released last week and led to the Education Minister offering her resignation.

So why are Alderneys marks so much better?

Mike Gaunt, Headteacher at St Anne's School said: "We've got cracking teachers, really hard working kids and very, very supportive parents, so all thats a fairly winning combination I think.

"We're the kind of school that never stands still really. This year alone, for example, we've introduced drama and music into our Key Stage Three curriculum - we've never had that before - so were delighted that we can do that and every single year we do something which is a development on what we've already done."
