Is £6.30 An Hour Enough To Live On? Empty Is £6.30 An Hour Enough To Live On?

Guernsey's politicians are expressing concerns about the island's minimum wage.

On the day it was put up to £6.30 an hour for adults, some Deputies yesterday said it's not enough.

With the UK's likely to hit just 5p less in the near future - there's call for Guernsey's low earners to be paid more.

Thats possibly enough to pay the rent so at least you can sit at home and starve to death out of sight.

Does anyone in Guernsey actually get as little as that. Some hotel staff might, but they get accomodation and grub as well.

When our friends had a hotel years ago they were paying £8.50 for cleaning staff.

Uk minimum wage more on it than not,

The National Minimum Wage rates

Is £6.30 An Hour Enough To Live On? Dg_180410
The National Minimum Wage (NMW) is a minimum amount per hour that most workers in the UK are entitled to be paid. Find out what the current rates are and where to get help if you think you are being paid below the minimum wage rate.

Current NMW rates

There are different levels of NMW, depending on your age and whether you are an apprentice. The current rates (from 1 October 2011) are:

  • £6.08 - the main rate for workers aged 21 and over
  • £4.98 - the 18-20 rate
  • £3.68 - the 16-17 rate for workers above school leaving age but under 18
  • £2.60 - the apprentice rate, for apprentices under 19 or 19 or over and in the first year of their apprenticeship

If you are of compulsory school age you are not entitled to the NMW. Some of your other employment rights are also different.

Past NMW rates can be viewed on the Low Pay Commission website.

Rates from 1 October 2012

  • £6.19 - the main rate for workers aged 21 and over
  • £4.98 - the 18-20 rate
  • £3.68 - the 16-17 rate for workers above school leaving age but under 18
  • £2.65 - the apprentice rate, for apprentices under 19 or 19 or over and in the first year of their apprenticeship

Some have now asked for thier own pay to be frozen
i think it should be means tested
i know many states member who gave up a very well paid job to become a full time deputy
many work long hours and will phone you back and come and speak with you if need be
even on a sunday!
some have youn g families with a mortage , they cannot afford a wage cut as they have already given up a good income .
yet there are many who take the wage and do nothing to earn it
and many who do not need the income as they earn plenty from rents on properties they own or have income from other .
time and motion and a mean testing would help . this way we who also have to grovel for little pay will know that they too have to declare as well .
at one time it was only the rich who would become deputies as there was no pay
this lead to all members being rich businesses people who then sent money from states projects to their own companies .
