Tax could wipe out shops
There is real fear that some small businesses in Alderney may be forced to close because of the combination of rising energy costs and recent 350% hikes in property tax.
Businesses accept little can be done about the high price of oil, but they believe the Guernsey government could ease the property tax burden which may cripple some shopkeepers already walking a thin financial line.
Businesses in Alderney are said to be reeling with tax bills rising from around £1,000 to £3,500 for some traders.
Former Treasury Minister - now Chief Minister - Lyndon Trott told a public meeting in Alderney recently that he'd promise to consider concessions and admitted that hardship would be greater in Alderney than in Guernsey.
Alderney States has asked the local Chamber of Commerce to prepare a report on the impact of the new tax. (from CIonline)
Will it start the ball rolling? ... Surely Small Guernsey Businesses are no different....

Re: Tax could wipe out shops
We are no difference and its disgusting how they have piled us with High TRP and extra States Insurance, now we have higher fuel costs and the are still talking about GST as a possibility.
I agree Alderney has it a bit harder because of the double shipping but the actual difference is the same here as there.
