SEWAGE flooded homes along Les Banques yesterday evening.

A pool of foul-smelling liquid rose up from the Belle Greve pumping station and began to flow into the gardens, garages and homes of the properties surrounding it.

Engineers have been working through the night to tackle the problem.

The burst pipe is the main underground pipe leading from the station to the start of the long sea outfall.

But officials say the swift response from states works and the fire brigade prevented any significant damage to properties.

The leak's not been dealt with yet, as the pipe has to be excavated before repairs can be carried out.

In the meantime, mobile pumps are in place to neighbouring homes from being effected.

Officials say they regret there is no alternative to discharging foul water directly onto the shore near the Red Lion roundabout.

Public Services have warned the emergency will lead to disruption for traffic along that part of the seafront.

Temporary traffic lights have been put in place and could remain there for some time, as repairs are likely to take several days.

This is disgusting but not a lot different to what usually happens just a bit closer in ,its about time Environment got their act together instead of burying their heads in the sand. The thing that made me mad the most is when they were reporting it on the radio they said it was awful with the traffic delays , well i know what i would prefer sitting in a tail back or wading in s**t its a no brainer is it not! Spare a thought to the poor folk who are flooded.

I see the "Take care there is a risk of pollution" signs are back at the top of the slips around the red lion area again today.
