Crime and detection rates falling

Guernsey saw an 11% reduction in reported crime in 2007, according to the annual report of the States Police.

In total, 3,024 crimes were reported, compared to 3,411 in 2006. But the report also said the percentage of crimes solved also fell.

The detection rate for 2007 dropped to 31% from 34% the year before.

There were fewer incidents of criminal damage, although this remained the most common complaint. There were increases in arson, harassment and forgery.

The force is also having to deal with an increasing amount of financial and computer crimes.

Meanwhile, reported crime in Alderney has increased by more than 50%. The total number of offences in 2007 was 127, compared to 80 in 2006.
Assault, burglary and criminal damage were among the crimes which saw an increase. (from BBC)

if u believe that report then you will believe that trott is a good CM. G.Le Page aka Chief Wigham is a man who wakes up every morning and hopes it is the 1960's. He is 100% out of touch with the 21st century. The local (or not so much now) force is split three ways at the HQ with Wigham and his fellow masons not having a clue what goes on below. Then you have the sarges and they are clueless about what they do at the top and then you have the foot soldier who is totally clueless of what any one does at HQ and why can't they fight real crime instead of escort the great and good home after their drunken parties or looking under rocks for another rock....Heart Beat eat your heart out...........

I do enjoy reading some of your responses Pete - albeit with your Simpsons based humour!

I would agree that scepticism is needed when considering these crime figures. A drop in reported crime could well mean a reduction in crime as reported, however an astute member of the public should be far more interested in crime detection figures.

Perhaps there is an 11% reduction in reported crime because the public no longer feel the Police Service adequately serves their needs in investigating crime and so don't bother reporting it.

I would be interested to know whether the Police have detected and successfully prosecuted more offenders and how those figures stack up before forming an opinion about whether they are more successful in ridding this island of crime.

It is perhaps more amusing to consider this report in light of the fact that the Police need more staff as they still keep leaving - which leads me to think that perhaps reported crime is down because there is no one there to answer the phone!

Perhaps that last comment is better delivered by you Pete and your admiration of our very dear Chief Wigham'!

MarkyD or Groundkeeper Willy, you raise a good point about the high level of cops leaving the force. It is alleged that morel is so low because of the backbiting, childish behaviors by fellow officers towards other officers, playground mentality, real crime stopped from being investigated because it would damage the islands finance industry and impact on the great and good, amazingly poor leadership fro higher ranks, top heavy in the rank of sarg, sexual relationships between other officers married or single.....Oh yes and full of masons.....watch your back PC.......
