I think you are barking up the wrong tree, Pete. Not everything is a conspiracy.

I am sure if someone in on call overnight then they will want some money even if they dont get a call, as they wont be able to do out, have a drink etc so there must be a payment made just for being on call.

Re: Emergency line "where"?
I have done some work for what was then States electric which sometimes you had to carry a bleeper in case there was an emergency you didn't get paid to carry it but if you were called out then the meter started ticking (pardon the pon) Its not like the person from housing has to to go out to do the job themselves all they have to do is answer the phone then call a contractor. And it has been said there can't be that many calls it would be interesting to know the numbers.

Re: Emergency line "where"?
Problem is that the person assigned to answer the calls has to be awake, therefore more than one person is needed to cover the phones. No-one is going so sit around all weekend waiting for a phone to ring without some sort of payment, particularly during the nights.
To get around this, a call centre is frequently used as the employee(s) on call will be responsible for a number of different emergency numbers. The previous Jersey number that was used by Housing was Securicor, who were also monitoring the phones for their own security systems and patrols. These services are usually put out to tender, so I would imagine that the new Belfast call centre put in a better bid than Securicor.

Re: Emergency line "where"?
Our emergency calls are contracted out to a security company that has 24 hour phone coverage and can therefore handle what few emergency calls we get. Which switchboard this company uses is a matter for them; we are only interested in the company contacting the right utilities or a list of designated contractors to deal with the emergency at hand, which is what we pay them for. if we paid civil servants at housing to run any emergency call centre it would be far to expensive and we could not justify those costs to States tenants who after all would have to pay for the service. I know it seems odd to have a call transferred off island but there are very few companies outside the emergency services who have 24 hour phone cover and we are forced to use what is available. I get the same problem when I ring our local bank and end up talking to someone in Scotland.

Re: Emergency line "where"?
Surely it would make a damn sight more sense for all emergency calls to be routed through the local police headquarters. They are on duty 24/7 anyway, arn't they ?

Re: Emergency line "where"?
Why do all the emergency services have a seperate control room, staffed 24/7 anyway? Surely it would make sense to have just the one which would save on costs in wages, running costs etc.....
