Emergency line "where"? Empty Emergency line "where"?

Post by Digger Wed 13 Aug 2008, 8:11 pm

We have just discovered we have no water supply to our house. That in itself is not to much of a problem as i have a bath/shower in September whether i need one or not its the seedlings you have to worry about :) , its when you phone the housing emergency number you get put through to Jersey then you have to spell out your address in phonetics LOL then they phone the water board over here. So my problem is why is there not a emergency line in Guernsey ?

"Update" the plumber has just told me the emergency line is now in Belfast so that explains the phonetics. :)

How are us states house tenants going to afford to pay for a call like that!

That really is a silly idea, the Crapauds could just about cope with our place names and accents. The Paddys have no change, no wonder it is chaos.

Hold on, hold on......why are we going via Belfast so a States house tenant can log a repair and get a company from Gsy to fix the problem. Surely this is madness. Why is the call not going through the Housing Department????

I would have thought that they have a service out of hours where the call is answered by a call centre, they probably pay a lot less than paying someone to be on standby all night, the person you got through to was probably monitoring calls for 20 - 30 different companies that may get one or two calls a night.

we are a little island for gods sake...questions should be asked. This is lunercy and nothing will convince me that this system is saving tax payers money.

They have enough staff in housing to be able to share the emergency phone line as part of their job ,who ever it is will take the mobile home with them so they can coordinate from home . They must have a list of the contractors they use just pass on the work . Not to difficult now is it.

I dont know what the costs are but they cant be much as I know a guy who has a company in Scotland that answers the phone when he is out of the office on call,

They answer as if its his own secretary, and they take the messages, he is a one man business and finds it affordable and more professional than an answerphone.

I just looked at one 24hr service and they answer and transfer up to 100 calls for £82.00 per months so it can be cheap

For the same reason UK companies use call centres in India

Because its cheaper than employing someone all night here that may not even get 1 call.

I am sure if someone in on call overnight then they will want some money even if they dont get a call, as they wont be able to do out, have a drink etc so there must be a payment made just for being on call.

I have done some work for what was then States electric which sometimes you had to carry a bleeper in case there was an emergency you didn't get paid to carry it but if you were called out then the meter started ticking (pardon the pon) Its not like the person from housing has to to go out to do the job themselves all they have to do is answer the phone then call a contractor. And it has been said there can't be that many calls it would be interesting to know the numbers.
