Scuba the Duck booted off facebook!

Scuba the Duck was almost left friendless as the world's largest social networking website decided that his face does not fit the bill.

The Sure sponsored Swimarathon mascot, who has been a mainstay of the charity event for many years, was bullied off of Facebook for being a fictional character.

Facebook is the most popular social networking website in the world and had more than 130 million unique visitors in June. The charitable duck had nearly 1000 friends at the time and was fast becoming the most popular duck on the island in the run-up to the 2008 Swimarathon on the 3 October.

The administrators of the site, after protest from Scuba, have realised this is all in aid of charity and transferred him onto a different page of the website, which marks him as a 'celebrity athlete'.

Now with more than 900 fans he is back on track to becoming the best known charitable duck on Guernsey. Members of Facebook can sign up to become his fan by searching for him on the site...

Steve Smith, Head of PR for Sure, said that it is great that online social networking media can be used to promote such a great cause.

"He had more friends, and now has more fans than I have on Facebook, and he certainly has more than any other mascot that I know of. The important thing here is to use his new found celebrity status to get more individuals up to Beau Sejour for the Swimarathon to raise money for the Guernsey Dyslexia Daycentre and other great local charities."

The Swimarathon is organised each year by the Guernsey Round Table and The Lions Club of Guernsey.
