Pay tribunal was 'unnecessary'
The union involved in Guernsey's eight
month long dispute over public sector pay has said it should have been
possible to resolve it locally.
On Tuesday a pay tribunal awarded Guernsey's public service workers a 5% pay rise, backdated to January.
The legally binding process was called for by the Public Sector
Remuneration Committee after talks with the union became deadlocked.
But the Unite union said it was "unnecessary" to involve a third party.
'Good deal'
The union's regional industrial organiser, Ron le Cras, said: "I
think it was unnecessary to have a third party come across to this
island and tell Guernsey people what should be done.
"The Public Sector Remuneration Committee (PSRC) should have been able to negotiate a deal and they haven't."
The dispute began after about 1000 public sector workers requested a pay rise of 7.9% but were offered just 3%.
Negotiations between Unite and the PSRC failed to reach a compromise, leading to an unofficial strike in July.
Speaking after the 5% settlement was announced, the Public
Sector Remuneration Committee said it was a good deal for workers,
department budgets and tax payers.
To
be quite honest they do have a point ,what was the point in calling
someone in from the UK to sort their own mess out . Are they so weak
they could not have resolved it themselves ,lets face it that is what
they are paid for after all.

Depends on what the best offer that was offered and refused, If they were offered 5% and refused it then they they did there job,
Does anyone know what the best offer that was refused was.

Re: Pay tribunal was 'unnecessary'
It would be very very interesting to see how much this fiasco cost us the tax payer. I must confess I do not have much faith in Le Cras. He compromised himself by meeting Trott behind closed doors and this I feel damaged him. I think 5% is an insult to the PSW and this megre increase will be swallowed up by taxes, insurance and of course our out of control inflation. With the economic out look looking more and more grimmer a 9% increase would not have even been enough. Sack Le Cras and bring in someone who’s got the best interests of their members first and their ego and prestige last.
One big factor which needs observing is the threatened cutbacks because of the 5% agreement. We could very easily see layoffs, cut back on services with the use of outside agencies which certain States members may have third party vested interest in……

Re: Pay tribunal was 'unnecessary'
The 5% pay rise awarded to Guernsey's public sector workers may stretch the government's budget, the Treasury and Resources Minister has said.
Deputy Charles Parkinson said each department's 2008 budget was set to cover a rise of just 3.5%, in line with the rate of inflation.
About 1,000 workers will receive the wage rise, back-dated to January, after it was awarded by a pay tribunal.
It was called after the workers' union and the States failed to agree on pay.
The failure of the Public Sector Remuneration Committee and the Unite union to agree on how much of a pay rise Guernsey's public sector workers should get led to an eight-month-long dispute and an unofficial strike in July.
An independent pay tribunal was eventually convened to resolve the issue.
It made its legally binding decision on Tuesday. (from bbc news)
Poor old Charles, he will have to rob Peter to pay Paul..lol
Re: Pay tribunal was 'unnecessary'
Bulls**t. They planned for the 5% and more and if T&R didn’t then Parkinson’s worse then Trott. This statement by Parkinson is a ruse to privatize certain departments within the PS...........watch this space....
