Staffing problems for Island Coachways sees service cut Empty Staffing problems for Island Coachways sees service cut

Island Coachways are having to cut the number of bus services they offer
because of staffing problems.

From tomorrow services will be reduced as a temporary measure.

Essential routes will carry on as normal but the 7/7a route will revert to a
twice-hourly service.

The extra evening services brought in earlier this month are also being
suspended, for the time being.

I have been told it is because Housing are refusing to give licences, yet there are no suitable applicants for the jobs.

I am hearing of several licences that you would expect to be renewed getting refused, although I agree that some of the jobs could be done by locals I doubt there are many locals out of work that are capable or have the licences to drive a bus.

So hopefully if it is an housing problem they will get it sorted before it affects what few visitors we might get this year.

Although the latest unemployment figure is 423, Social Security stated recently that about 300 of them are unemployable youngsters. If you add in the number of unemployable older people, the number really available for work must be closer to 50.

The job centre has over 100 vacancies on it's books and many sectors, such as finance and construction, do not use the job centre routinely. Some estimate that there are between 2000 and 3000 vacant posts currently.

How about getting those who are unemployed that have a driving licence who are suitable (there must be some surely?), to have Guernsey Bus train them to pass their bus category and then we will have local bus drivers = no licences required + less unemployed?

Does this add up?

What do you think?

I think
most people on the dole don't want to work. There are enough jobs in catering
but must people think it is beneath them. The training would cost more money
for people who want money for nothing.

The problem is that in the summer there are more bus routes and island tours, liner tours etc, training a local unemployed would put them out of work again for the winter.

How about the younger peeps doing the year round regular bus services thereby not requiring any drivers from elsewhere and trying to get part-time drivers, perhaps retired or semi-retired peeps, to cover the summer extra services?

This would help the number of unemployed.

I believe that there is a minimum age of 25 to drive the buses. The
300-odd youngsters out of work would therefore not be suitable for the
job. Another 50-100 would be unsuitable due to the strict medical and
licence requirements. (Would you want to be driven around by a
half-blind drunk?) The small number left are women, therefore leaving
none of the unemployed suitable for this skilled driving job.

Apart from that you have to want to drive the oversized vehicle around our small roads and get abuse thrown at you from other motorists.

The bottom line is this is one of those areas where they do need licenes qualified drivers for a 6 month period and housing needs to give them the them,

All abuse is filed under 'Don't care, sticks and stones etc'. I was contacted by IC asking if I could come back to work there,so housing doesn't seem to be a problem. Sadly I have other commitments over here so I can't. Maybe next year!!!

Watch out,Guernsey!!!
