Springwatch Spring Clean - Coming to a Beach Near You
Guernsey’s Environment Department has teamed up with BBC Guernsey to encourage people to explore the Island’s beaches and find out what goes on behind the scenes to manage our coastline - not just for human visitors but also for our wildlife.
BBC Springwatch this year is all about enjoying and understanding what’s special about our beaches – from the West Coast stretches of sand and surf, to the little coves where you can just lie back and listen to the sea birds. There’s something for everyone in Guernsey and we’re hoping over the coming week that you’ll enjoy exploring and finding out a bit more about our coastline with us.
From 29th May through to 6th June the BBC will be talking to people who work to care for the beaches and the coastline. We’ll be looking at what’s special about our sand dunes and shingle banks, and you can find out about which species of birds, insects and plants you might discover around the coast at this time of year.
BBC Springwatch always has a practical theme and on Saturday 6th June everyone who loves being beside the sea has the opportunity to help out by taking part in the Spring Watch Spring Clean. States Works do a great job in keeping our beaches clean, but as there’s always more to be done early in the summer season, BBC Guernsey are seeking help from families, individuals, clubs, schools or businesses to spruce up a beach for Springwatch Spring Clean on 6th June.
A Spokesperson for the Environment Department said, "A Springwatch Spring Clean doesn’t have to be over a large area – friends or family could give some tender loving care to a bay, or you might like to just tidy up the bit of the beach you enjoy visiting most. Every little bit helps to make the beaches a better place for us to visit and a safer haven for our wildlife."
Taking part is easy - just contact BBC Guernsey or pop in to Sir Charles Frossard House and let us know which beach you plan to clean. Black bags and gloves are available from BBC Guernsey and we’ll let you know where to put the rubbish so that it can be picked up for disposal.
"We all enjoy Guernsey’s fantastic coastline but sometimes we take it for granted and this is a chance for all of us to ensure our favourite parts of the coast are litter free this Spring." said BBC Guernsey’s Campaign Producer Ben Chapple.
Tune in to BBC Guernsey on 93.2FM, 1116MW & 99FM in Alderney from 29th May.
