Women's Boxing in Guernsey
Ahead of the first competitive women's match to be held in the island, we got an insight into the world of female boxing.
The Amalgamated Boys Boxing Club has been operating since 1936, and generations of men in Guernsey have trained there. But until 2009 women were not accepted for regular training.
Senior Coach Graham Guilbert said some of the club's committee members' old fashioned-values got in the way, as they were keen for the club to stay a boys' club. But Graham seemed happy for the club to evolve with the times.
"All sports are moving on," he said. "It's a really good thing."
Impressive: the speed by which the girls learn
They had a lot of interest from ladies keen to learn the sport, and in August 2009 six girls were training regularly, with mixed training sessions every week and ladies only evenings on Thursdays.
Mum of three, Emma was planning to box in the first competitive match in Guernsey. When asked what it was that attracted her to the sport, she said it was something she had been interested in for a long time.
"I've always been a bit of a tomboy... I've done loads of sports, and this is probably the hardest thing I've done."
But how did the men take to the ladies? Far from mocking or teasing, they appeared to be very welcoming. One member, Shane said he had a chance to spar with a couple of the women, and found them really impressive.

"Their fitness is absolutely outstanding," he said. "Their technique and everything is coming along very quickly."
"I've got a great respect for them doing it to be honest."
All the men seemed to agree on one thing - that the girls adapt and learn very fast. Although women may lack the sheer physical strength of the male boxers, Graham said: "They've got a hell of a lot of aggression!"
He also added, "I shouldn't say this but they pick up things a lot quicker than men."

Would you go and watch women fight?

Thai women have far more resilience than their european counterparts
I admire any woman who partakes in boxing :)
It needs serious fitness levels
