Parents 'buy £150 Nativity costumes'
Rex Features
Competitive parents are spending up to £150 on their children's Nativity costumes, a retail chain has revealed.
Reuters reports that Debenhams customers have been buying arctic fur throws for children playing sheep, while other parents have bought pashminas, velour dressing gowns, and ivory bridesmaid dresses for angels.
The phenomenon, known as "manger chic", has been attributed to a lack of time among parents and competition for school places.
Debenhams spokesman Ed Watson said: "The amount of money that some parents want to spend on their child's Nativity play appearance would enable Baby Jesus to leave the stable and check into a five-star hotel.
"While we applaud parents for wanting to do their very best for their children, we feel certain that the story of the Nativity can still be told using very simple materials."
"On up on my neighbour" is my feeling to this...
