Search engine finds Sark
SARK was under the spotlight yesterday as it celebrated its first year as a democratic island.
Microsoft featured Sark on its Bing homepage yesterday.
The Bailiwick island featured on a Microsoft homepage a year to the day since its first election following reforms.
Bing.com was launched by the computer software giant in June as a rival to alternative internet search engines. Its home page features daily-changing photography.
Sark tourism committee member Paul Armorgie said such opportunities could not be taken for granted.
‘It is not surprising as Sark photographs very well and lends itself well to this sort of thing.’
Mr Armorgie said the island seemed to receive more than its fair share of unexpected publicity.
He said with an annual budget for tourism of £50,000 it did not have a lot of money to spend so chance free advertising was always welcome.
Mr Armorgie owns Stocks Hotel and was one of 28 conseillers voted in at the island’s historic election.
Until last year, Sark was the only remaining feudal state in the world.
He said the island was still going through a honeymoon period. ‘Democracy is very new to Sark and we are still coming to terms with it.’
Of the 28 elected, each selected at random a two or four-year term.
‘We are becoming familiar and comfortable with our own particular brand of democracy. It has its critics – there are people who have issues with the way we work. When Sark set its foot on the damp democracy trail, it was inevitable the rest would evolve around it,’ said Mr Armorgie.
He said they were by no means sure where they would end up and the system would require ‘fine tuning’. (from thisisguernsey)
