Was China right to execute drug smuggling Briton?
A British man, thought to be mentally ill, has been executed in China for drug smuggling. Should China have shown clemency?
Akmal Shaikh was condemned to death for smuggling 4kgs of heroin into China - a charge he denied.
He was executed on Tuesday morning despite a string of appeals from the British government and his relatives, who had claimed Mr Shaikh suffered from bipolar disorder and was unwittingly lured into the crime.
Should Chinese authorities have granted a reprieve?
Is the Chinese government right not to bow to international pressure?
Should Britain interfere in other countries' legal systems?

It's not much of a shock is it - the Chinese are hardly known for their compassion!!
And this is a nation that our politicians are keen to get involved with, a nation that executes thousands of people each year, for a multitude of crimes.
Let's hope nobody plants anything on Trotty the next time he's off galavanting................

Re: Was China right to execute drug smuggling Briton?
Usually I would say he got what he deserved. One report I read said the amount of drugs he was carrying could have killed over 25,000 people, that's why the Chinese took the stance they did
It's his mental health issues that bother me. One report said that no evidence had been put forward about the state of his alleged mental health at his trial. If not, why not?
It also stated that there was nothing on medical record about him having a mental health issue. Was this just an excuse to try and stop the execution?
I would like to have proof that he had a mental health issue before I say one way or the other that China were right/wrong in what they did.

Bucktrouts import enough drugs every year that have the capability to kill thousands of people. That's all fine and dandy though, because they're legal.

If the UK still had the death penalty the arsehole Megraghi would not be alive today. China is a a communist dictatorship they execute crims. None of our business. He knew the law end of story.
In the uk he would have been tagged and left to go about his businesss. I have no compassion where drugs are concerned.
