Guernsey broadband speed doubles
Broadband speeds for users in the Bailiwick of Guernsey will double from the start of May, according to the company operating the island's network. Cable and Wireless Guernsey said the speed of 2Mb and 4Mb services would double while the wholesale price of 8Mb would see a 37% decrease. It said it aims to deliver a quality service to the maximum number of people over a strong resilient network. The price of services depends on which Internet Service Provider is used. Guernsey's broadband network was last upgraded in 2008 from 1Mb to 2Mb. About 5% of Guernsey householders will not benefit from the upgrade in May. Russell Sharman, chief technology officer, said: "Some homes do struggle to get maximum broadband speeds due to the distance from an exchange, or due to the wiring in the house. "It's for these reasons that not all lines will achieve the full headline speed of 4Mb or 8Mb; the service is an 'Up to' service, being the maximum speed that the line can achieve." (from BBC) |
