Guernsey shoplifting figures nearly double
The reported number of shoplifting incidents in the Bailiwick
of Guernsey has almost doubled in just a year.
In 2008 there were 118 reported incidents of shoplifting across the
Bailiwick, of which 83 were resolved.
This figure rose to 226 last year, with 168 of those cases solved, meaning
the detection rate went up by 4% to 74%.
Shopowner Daphne Brouard said it was something that needed to be taken
seriously as children could be urged to go on to stealing bigger things.
Mrs Brouard and her husband own the Candy Shop on the Bridge, which has been
targeted by shoplifters.
She said: "We work very hard and we're open very late to try to make the shop
successful. We're serving the community and people haven't go the right to just
come in here and take our things."
Sgt Andy Hockey from Guernsey Police said: "I can't account for the rise in
incidents, between 2008 and 2009, all I can compare the figures on is the amount
of detections, successful convictions and maybe cautions for such offences. They
have also increased along with the numbers that have occurred."(from BBC)
I think the rise in incidents are drug related....

Re: Guernsey shoplifting figures nearly double
Could be a change in Police attitude, which is encouraging more people to report the offences.

Re: Guernsey shoplifting figures nearly double
How has the Police attitude changed?
Could be the economic situation that is causing people to thieve so the amount of incidents have risen dramatically and the reporting has risen in line with the incidents.
