Guernsey needs to do more to tackle the problem of alcohol abuse, says one accident and emergency doctor.

The majority of those admitted to hospital at weekends are teenagers or those in their 20s, suffering from the effects of drink, said Dr Brian Parkin.

He said younger people were much more likely to get involved in physical violence after drinking.

"It's a burden on society. I don't have any answers but I think we need to highlight it is an increasing problem."

Dr Parkin said: "Some people present just with the effects of acute intoxication, they're found drunk or incapable of looking after themselves or looking after their airway, some people might get more depressed and it might be the precipitator for taking an overdose."
