Herm axe head may date back 6,000 years
A RARE axe head which could be up to 6,000 years old has been found in Herm by a Jerseyman who was celebrating his 50th birthday.
Carl Dowden was walking near the common last week when he spotted half a centimetre of stone with smooth edges sticking out of the path. To his surprise, when he kicked the stone, the axe head came out.
It is believed that the recent heavy rain in the Channel Islands may have loosened the soil around the axe head and revealed enough of it to catch Mr Dowden’s sharp eye.
