Breakwater cost taxpayer £430,000
Maintaining Alderney’s breakwater has cost taxpayers £430,000 this year.
Guernsey States is responsible for the 880m Braye Harbour structure and spent 18 weeks refurbishing it between March and August.
Fine weather during the summer allowed contractors to achieve high productivity in comparison with previous years. By the end of August they had worked 71 days – the highest number since 2006, when additional contractor time was purchased over and above the contract.
This year contractors placed 400t of concrete around the breakwater. The work involved divers building sections of concrete wall against the face of the structure to protect it from the elements.
A spokesman for the Public Services Department said: ‘This is a major annual maintenance project which is an ongoing commitment for the States. We are pleased that this year the weather conditions have enabled such high productivity, as well as finishing on schedule and within budget.’ (from CTV)
May cost a fortune, but Alderney needs it...

have they submitted the costings or a break down of materials and labour charges
wonder how that could cost so much for just 71 days...hummm that working on both tides? or just the one and if just then that would be 71 half days at less than 6 hrs a day cost effect being bloomin lots for very little
