The key to how I stay so slim? The blood type diet, says Sir Cliff
He has shunned the vices that many of his rock and roll contemporaries gave in to.
And years of clean living have paid off for Sir Cliff Richard, who has now admitted his satisfaction at still having a 30-inch waist.
Still trim: Sir Cliff says that he is proud that he has not acquired a gut and still has a 30-inch waist, much like he had during the 1960s
The singer, who turns 70 next Thursday, has revealed that he is ‘obsessed’ with his looks and follows a bizarre diet that helps him stay slim. Sir Cliff, who last month showed off his toned figure in a photoshoot for his latest calendar, has attributed his appearance to the Blood Group diet. Developed by Dr Peter D’Adamo in 1997, it advises followers to eat only certain foods based on their blood type.
THE BLOOD TYPE DIET
The Blood Type diet recommends that you follow different eating plans depending on which type you are.
Those who are type A, such as Sir Cliff Richard, are advised to cut out red meat and dairy completely.
Below is a typical regime for a type A person.
Recommended foods: Fish, including cod, salmon and monkfish. White meat such as turkey and chicken. Peanuts, pumpkin seeds, lentils, broccoli, carrots, spinach and leeks. Fruit including apricots, figs, grapefruit and raisins, herbal teas and plenty of water.
Foods to avoid: Red meat, shellfish, dairy and eggs, wheat. Fruits including banana, cantaloupe, coconut, honeydew, mango, orange, papaya and tangerine. Vegetables including mushrooms, olives, potatoes and tomatoes.
Sir Cliff, who is blood type A, has cut out red meat and dairy products as well as lobster, crab, prawns, wheat, potatoes, tomatoes, mangoes, papaya, bananas and aubergines.
He can eat protein such as turkey and chicken and carbohydrates, such as rice, but has stopped drinking orange juice. The singer told Saga magazine: ‘I can’t eat red meat, one thing I do miss, but there’s a lot I can eat – chicken, fish, turkey – and I’ve developed a liking for soya milk, especially if it’s flavoured. ‘Friends go on about people’s obsession with my looks but I can assure you that no one’s more obsessed than me. ‘I’m proud that I can go on stage wearing the latest Versace or Thierry Mugler suit and know I’m going to look good.’
The 5ft 10in star weighs 10st 10oz and has a 30-inch waist, the same size as he did 30 years ago. Leading nutritionist Rose Bettenson yesterday said the Blood Group diet had proved effective for improving health, adding: ‘Within the nutrition world it is well known. It is especially effective for people with digestive issues. ‘It can be taken too far, but followers who are sensible often tend to have more energy. As a result, you will naturally lose weight.’
