Group wants to stop closure of Guernsey flumes
The water slides are being closed as part of a States spending review looking to save up to £70m
A campaign has begun to save the flumes at Guernsey's Beau Sejour leisure centre from closure.
The water slides are set to close at the end of the year as the Culture and Leisure Department looks to save money.
Sisters Kelly and Lynsey de Carteret have appealed to businesses to come up with the £30,000 needed to keep the flumes open for a further two years.
The cost of replacing the flumes, which have been in place for 20 years has been estimated at £140,000.
The sisters have the support of more than 800 Facebook users and hope to raise the necessary funds by Christmas. (from BBC)
We at VDI wish the sisters all the best for their appeal..

Re: Group wants to stop closure of Guernsey flumes
I can remember the flumes being put there all those years ago as i was a member of Beau se Jour then and used to go swimming daily
they removed the astroglide from out side for these things .
there was a big fuss at how ugly they looked from the sea front and that the cost will never pay off .how times have changed .
Are they still used as much as they were popular when they first went in but I know they are cutting cost so would it be cheaper and cost saving to get rid of them.
Unless of course they are used to pay for their keep .
and as you say this is the closest thing they have to a water park .
do we know how many use them each week/month?

Re: Group wants to stop closure of Guernsey flumes
Campaigners hoping to save Guernsey's water flumes have been set a more ambitious target.
Sisters Kelly and Lynsey de Carteret initially aimed to raise £30,000 by Christmas to pay for the refurbishment of the existing slides at Beau Sejour.
The Culture and Leisure Department has now given them a year to raise £90,000 for a single, new slide.
Minister Mike O'Hara said the work of the campaigners was "absolutely wonderful".
He said: "If they can do it, it's good news, they've got my support.
"I don't think anyone wants to see the flumes close, but we are where are and financially it is difficult for [the department] to do anything about it."
Previously Deputy O'Hara said any refurbishment work on the 20-year-old flumes would be wasted if the money to replace them in 2012 was not found.
Kelly de Carteret said as well as approaching island companies for donations they were planning a number of fundraising events (from BBC)

Re: Group wants to stop closure of Guernsey flumes
My kids loved the water slides the last time we were in Guernsey! It would be a shame to see them go as Guernsey has very little to offer the younger tourist.
Keep up the good work DC...
