Alderney Week theme announced
“Fantasy Islands of the World”
It may seem the wrong time of year to be thinking about Alderney Week but you try telling that to the organisers.
For them, the work never stops and they've just announced the theme of Alderney Week 2011, as well as details of a competition in the new year.
Below - the organisers announcement:
For the past ten years, the Alderney Week organisers have created a new theme for every Alderney Week - a theme that can easily be adapted for Cavalcade floats, fancy dress walking groups and various events such as the music nights on the Butes and at the Quarry, to the Fun Run and Triathlon, the Daft Raft Race, the Man-powered Flight, the Sandcastle Competition and the Gala Spectacular, to name but a few.
“The 2011 theme Fantasy Islands of the World will provide plenty of inspiration and ideas for floats and costumes”, says Alderney Week Team Leader Ronnie Cairnduff.
“ Just let your imagination run wild and bring the culture, colour and music from islands around the world to Alderney. This theme offers a great scope, because anything goes . “
“Fantasy Islands could be the islands of Bermuda, the Bahamas, Hawaii, Honolulu, Tahiti , the Grand Canaries, the Greek, Scottish or Irish islands, or islands from down under and other exotic places, not to mention Burhou! If you go on the internet and type in „world islands‟, you‟ll be amazed how many come up in the search. There are hundreds and hundreds of them, some you‟ve never heard of, some not even discovered yet , and some fictitious places like Treasure Island and those islands which only exist in your imagination and in your dreams.”
“We want people to be creative with this theme and get children interested in and inspired by the culture, costumes, music and traditions of other islands in the world. We are hoping for a spectacular parade of floating islands and costumes on Cavalcade Day, when the judges will be looking for the most colourful, original and obscure. “
As to the official logo for Alderney Week 2011, for the sixth consecutive year the Alderney Week Team will be launching a Bailiwick-wide “Design-a-Logo” competition challenging all youngsters under the age of 18 to come up with the most eye-catching design. The Design-a-Logo competition will be launched early February.
