Supermarkets reaping the benefit of stores’ closures
GUERNSEY’S supermarkets have seen an upsurge in trade after the closure of Safeway Rohais and Checkers at Admiral Park.
The Channel Islands Cooperative Society alone said it had seen a significant rise in weekly sales which equated to opening three new small Locale shops.
Safeway closed at the beginning of February and will reopen as a Waitrose supermarket tomorrow. Checkers shut its doors yesterday and will be closed until 7 April while it is also converted into a Waitrose store.
Co-op chief operating officer Mark Cox said he was pleased to see more people coming through the doors. (from GEP)
Bet that will all change over the next few weeks..
Re: Supermarkets reaping the benefit of stores’ closures
I noticed a big difference in shopping at the coop at the longstore .the staff are super and were so busy restocking the shelves as it was just so busy /

I thought it was a shop not a visitor attraction.

Waitrose Now Open
Guernsey's first Waitrose store is now open…. Alongside food and drink the shop on the Rohais is offering a range of products including homewares and baby items - as well as local produce. The Post Office inside the store has also now reopened and remains conveniently near the checkouts. The supermarket chain has kept on all of the 200 staff who used to be employed by Sandpiper CI as well as creating more than 100 new jobs in the island.

I went in with eyes wide closed!!! and became an immediate convert - lovely goods and lovely staff and prices not as bad a M&S (also doesn't pay Mons Creasey's Pension Plan - which gets my vote)
the choice was so amazing I had to constrain myself and only buy what I needed (well everybody needs fresh Pineapple slices - don't they?) If they go on as they started off some shops over here are going to have to stop resting on their laurels and do a bit more for freshness of goods along with variety - Impressed? you bet I was !!!!!

Re: Supermarkets reaping the benefit of stores’ closures
I went in on the first day and went to the cafe as well as the shop - the cafe is brilliant - highly recommended - then did a minor shop then and went back yesterday with my sister - she loved it! I brought alot of meat there yesterday to freeze and was very impressed with the prices - They do have alot of new lines that I have never seen at the co-op or Alliance before - was very impressed.

Re: Supermarkets reaping the benefit of stores’ closures
Not that impressed , ok it looks nice and there is a lot of NEW things on the shelf's but the prices are higher that some places . I won't be going there to often . IMO the states should have let the likes of Tesco or Asda in so the average person can afford to shop not just the better off .
Another situation where the public of Guernsey will be limited in the choice to shop , what should of append IMO is Checkers would have been turned into Asda and Safeway into Tesco , but that would never happen because it would be to much competition for the other retailers , i am affraid once they settle here the prices will creep up and up .

Re: Supermarkets reaping the benefit of stores’ closures
A lot of the comments on here are very similar to the comments made when Checkers opened. When the novelty has worn off you will see that Waitrose is no different to any other supermarket and you will resort to the usual moaning about price, fresh food, lack of choice etc. etc. etc.

Re: Supermarkets reaping the benefit of stores’ closures
Sorry Digger but Tesco and Asda prices are cheap because they sell the rubbish which other stores have rejected. All prices of everything are related to quality. M&S are the only ones who match Waitrose for quality.
And their staff are members of the John Lewis partnership, so it is in their interest to do a good job. !8% bonus this year, can't be bad.

Re: Supermarkets reaping the benefit of stores’ closures
staff who had previously been employed by checkers couldnt have cared less about customer service when it was run by sandpiper group were re employed by waitrose ..what a turn around now they are all happy and offered to help you find where things are...its amazing what the promise of a nice bonus will do to the demeaner of people...long may it continue
digger i didnt find it that expensive ...the quality of the bread alone is worth going there for and that is cheaper than anywhere else for the waitrose brand x

Re: Supermarkets reaping the benefit of stores’ closures
Its nice when you can afford quality , but increasely more and more people are finding it harder to manage , not being funny but i would rather eat a cheaper brand than not eat at all . Thiste we had some french bread from there last night IMO nothing out of this world , Like i said before the choice is better .

It came top even beating M&S in the 2010 quality and service survey - and the people who work there are shareholders - I think it is in their interest to ensure that the service and food are kept up to standard - so they can enjoy a good payout and we can reap the benefit

Re: Supermarkets reaping the benefit of stores’ closures
when you shop at waitrose pleae remember to put your green token into one of the bins on your way out...three are chosen on a regular basis and the one with most gren tokens wins a donation from waitrose...the bowel cancer charity is the most important of the three at the moment x
