There are fears that a dangerous form of caterpillar may have become established in Guernsey.

They are the larvae of the Oak Processionary Moth which is present in Jersey.

As
their name suggests they have a habit of forming nose-to-tail
processions up and down trees between their nest and the leaves on
which they feed.

The pests not only cause extensive defoliation
of oak trees, they also pose a serious health risk to humans. Hairs
shed by the caterpillars contain toxins that can cause severe skin
reactions and breathing problems. They should not be touched.

If
anyone suspects they have spotted Oak Processionary Moth caterpillars
they're asked to contact the Plant Health Service at Raymond Falla
House on 234567.
