Unemployment at record level

Unemployment in Guernsey has risen 8% in the last month.

It has climbed from 367 to a record 400 since the end of December.

Year on year, the number of people out of work has increased by around a quarter.

The figures focus on the number of people claiming unemployment or supplementary benefit, and who have not worked at all in the last week.

If claimants who have done some work or training during the week are included, the figure rises to 568.

Record level? What about the 3500 who were unemployed in the late '70s?

In Guernsey ? Really I didn't know that. How did that happen ?

Collapse of the tomato and tourist industries.

I remember a figure of about 800 at the start of the '80s. May have risen to about 1,000. Can't remember 3,500 though... that would be one heck of a large percentage of the working population, bearing in mind the total population was probably about 10,000 less than now.
