shop opening on sunday thrown out
have the states made the right decision re shops opening on a
sunday..once again it has been thrown out and imo its a disgrace that
government can tell people that they cant shop in any shop they choose
to on a sunday..its also sad that it seems that smaller shops are being
protected by this very silly tape measure law..

Re: shop opening on sunday thrown out
Good call by the States, Sunday should be a bit different as to spend time with family etc. anyone can do their shopping in the other six days and would have to be quite sad to want to do this on the seventh. I hope this will be the last we hear of this for many years. just for the record I am not religious and do not think this is satan's work.

Re: shop opening on sunday thrown out
How can it be called an out dated law when it has just been re-ratified by the State's vote ?

Re: shop opening on sunday thrown out
We could see a referendum on Sunday trading laws in Guernsey.
There isn't a law enabling such a move at present - but the Commerce and
Employment Minister seems keen to ask the public what we all think.
The States decision to maintain the status quo with Sunday trading
restrictions appears to have split the island with comments to the
Island FM Facebook page on both sides of the argument.
A previous Island FM poll suggested sixty one percent of you were
against any changes to our Sunday trading laws - but other polls have
said the opposite.
Deputy Kevin Stewart is adamant businesses don't want a suspension of
all restrictions but has tweeted that the only answer may be a
referendum.
He said he'll discuss it with the Commerce and Employment board - but
the Mother of the House, Deputy Mary Lowe, then pointed out there is no
law enabling a referendum in Guernsey.

it is an outdated law it has been enforced to protect smaller shops imo..this law has been on the statute book forever and a day..they made a slight change to it in 2003 so that some shops could open..they are allowed to open if they meet the tape measure rule .

Re: shop opening on sunday thrown out
But it has been updated by the latest States vote, so it is no longer outdated.
It is only considered outdated by those who would prefer a 7 day madhouse rather than a 6 day one.

Re: shop opening on sunday thrown out
I think there is more important items to debate than bloney shopping on a sunday
there are many shops who can open on a sunday if they want to but dont as it is not cost effective
i have been in to town when the shops have been open on a Sunday. the only people there are the ones from the cruise ships , no locals even though it was known the shops would be open as it was a common knowledge they would be.
Town roads also need time off as well ,there are many things that is done on a Sunday. to maintain the place . we in our floral use Sundays to maintain the thousands of planters around the town. the other services use Sunday to look at electric and other services ,shops do need a day to be cleaned properly . Windows and shop fronts get a good clean on this day , this is done by folks who do want to work on a Sunday and get paid overtime to up their very low wages . if we have Sunday opening across the board there will not be double time or any overtime pay it will be straight time. many rely on this extra .
the christmas lights buntings and others things get put up in town on a Sunday , we have tried other days but it was too dangerous for going up a ladder and for anyone walking under the work going on,
If you need any shopping there are some stores that are open to suit needs , i feel this will suit all . what you spend and a Sunday you will not spend on a Monday. we have a certain amount of disposable income to spend ,we can spend it over 6 days . having a7 days to shop does not mean they will earn more ,just mean their overheads are more ,thus pushing up the prices to the shoppers .
We do have a rota for the chemist why not have a rota for other shops and let the town breathe on a Sunday
Also there are still many who live above town shops ,they also need a day with the bustle of folks under their windows ,they have a lot to put up with now there is so many night clubs in town area , years ago these were dotted around the island now it is all focused in town centre .

Re: shop opening on sunday thrown out
The Mother of the House is pushing out the idea of having a referendum on Sunday Trading.
A trial suspension of the law was defeated during last month's States
meeting - but now Deputy Kevin Stewart is calling for an island wide
vote.

They are wasting time there is many other things they can save their energy for like making sure we have tighter controls of the perverts who come into the island

Re: shop opening on sunday thrown out
very true kat..everybody coming to live in the island should have to be police checked and if they have any serious convictions of any kind they should be refused entry
