Is the Guernsey States fit for purpose?
A WIDE-RANGING independent review into whether the States is fit for purpose is on the way.
Although its scope has yet to be set, the assessment will cover both the political arm and the civil service and issues including leadership, openness and accountability, potentially dramatically changing the way the States operates.
The Wales Audit Office, which handled the Fallagate investigation, has been commissioned by the Public Accounts Committee to carry out this ‘good governance’ report.
Several other independent reports have already questioned the effectiveness of the current system.
‘We think this is one of the most important reviews we will be doing this term,’ said PAC chairman Leon Gallienne (pictured).
‘It runs parallel to the fundamental spending reviews and others. If the WAO think there’s an issue with departments or committees that need to be looked at more thoroughly, we can then put people in place to investigate. We’re 100% behind this review and it will be of great value to this island.’
The review is expected to look at boundaries between politicians’ work and that of the staff.
‘Everyone thinks that corporate governance is just financial, but it’s more thorough than that,’ said Deputy Gallienne.
A complete waste of money in my opinion, another report, another debate and nothing will happen...

What exactly is the purpose of the States supposed to be ? This needs to be defined before it's fitness can be assessed.

Well..... time will tell. I must admit though, I do share your cynical view!
It feels like the money is draining away on yet another 'review' by some UK firm!!
