PRICE hikes on alcohol have boosted membership applications for the Ex-Servicemen’s Club.

It has some of the lowest prices in Guernsey and with drink set to go up by about 4% from today, some members expect to see more people wanting to join.

‘It’s already happening,’ said postal worker Steve Rodger, 46. ‘I do feel sorry for publicans at the moment. I was in the industry for years and I can understand the hardship pubs face. There’s only so much money to go round and if people can’t drink cheaply, they will go elsewhere or stay at home.’ (from this is guernsey)

Another blow to the Pub Landlords...

It is a problem, as many of us either did not put up prices last time or on the last 2 increases put it up only half of what it should have been, I was talking to a publican yesterday who told me he expected a few raised words from his regulars as he had to increase the prices by 10p.

The problem is there will be less drinking, less profit for the pubs (many of which are already having a hard time) and not likely to be more tax for the government.

I think thats half the problem now, many clubs and pubs just get people in who have started the night off at home to save money and have to deal with drunks and the problems they cause withough actually making the money out of them getting in that state.

Not saying you get like that KK - Lol

It was like that when i was a nipper also Wayside but not so prevalent . We used to get a small bottle of vodka slip it in your pocket and top up during the evening. It used to keep the cost down so you could go out every night. lol!

I think the gradual plight of the pub is quite a sad thing.

Maybe it's the age but I dont tend to go to the pub for just a drink with a couple of mates anymore, it's usually some sort of occassion (birthday, the odd football match etc) that takes me out.Having said that I try to get to gigs as often as I can.

So yeah, staying in is more preferable than going out, just glad I'm not single (sorry ladies) and feeling I need to get out more.

Also, the smoking ban hasn helped, not just the crazy price of booze.Plus some pubs are just rubbish.
