Post by GD Fri 25 Mar 2011, 5:14 pm

A 21-year-old Royal Marine from Guernsey has been awarded an honour for his outstanding bravery in Afghanistan.

Mne Alexander Tostevin was shot in the head and knocked to the ground but got back on his feet and returned fire, allowing his comrades to get to safety.

He was on sentry duty at Patrol Base Blenheim in Sangin when the enemy bullet penetrated his helmet.

His citation for a Mention in Despatches said: "Tostevin remained steadfast at his sentry position, only seeking medical assistance once the patrol was out of danger, by which time he was suffering with deep shock."

Mne Tostevin said: "I was over the moon when I heard the news.

"I know a few other lads who also got shot through the helmet and carried on. I feel very privileged."

Tostevin was one of 136 servicemen to be honoured for their bravery in Afghanistan in the Operational Honours List.
