UK headteacher to improve island school

A UK headteacher is being parachuted into a Guernsey school to help drive up standards.

Geoff Cowley has been appointed by the Education Department as a "school improvement partner".

The highly unusual move follows poor exam results at La Mare De Carteret High School this summer.

This summer it was revealed that just 12% of pupils had achieved 5 or more A* to C grades in their GCSEs.

That led to the Education minister offering her resignation, which was rejected by the States, and a review of all the island's education system - the results of which are expected next week.

But now Geoff Cowley has been brought in from the UK to give the management at this school a lesson in how to drive up standards.

He's been given the title of School Improvement Partner and will be working with staff for the next two terms to try and put things right.

Mr Cowley was headteacher at Gleed Boys School in Lincolnshire, a school which in its last Ofsted report from two years ago was rated good, but not outstanding with GCSE results described by the inspector as "below average".

He'll be backed up by two additional advisors who'll be working specifically with Maths and English teachers.
