Will Sunday be a success story? Empty Will Sunday be a success story?

Sunday trading is a topic that always creates controversy across the Channel Islands.

Before Christmas in Jersey, large supermarkets were allowed to open on Sundays in the run up to the festive season.

And figures just in show that shoppers made the most of their extra day.

Mark Cox, from the Channel Islands Co-operative, said: "It's difficult when you're trading a limited period where you're not open on a Sunday normally.

"Once the demand was there for Christmas, we had a fantastic time, particularly the last Sunday before Christmas."

Guernsey however was a different story.

In November, there was backlash from across the island - when a church leader said Satan was behind proposals to open on the 'sacred' day.

The man behind those rejected plans, Deputy Mike Hadley, even quit the Commerce and Employment Board.

Although for the rest of the year, smaller shops in Jersey are allowed to open on the last day of the week; stores with over 700 square metres are not.

These new figures show, when consumers are given the choice, they do choose to shop on a Sunday.

In fact, compared with last years' figures, the Co-op's pre-Christmas Sunday sales were well up.

Something that is seen across the UK, where Sunday is the busiest days in supermarkets.

Mr Cox added: "We've got to make sure the balance is there, but ultimately if a consumer decides its up to us then as a retailer to look at how that works and make sure we can respond in the best possible way.

"Particularly in this day and age when we're up against the internet making sure that we're there for the customers when they want us is very very important."

I can't see that a shop would take more money over 7 days that they would in 6 days. Just have a bigger wage bill.
