Living Streets look for funds.
FUNDS are needed to secure a safe path through a vinery site that backs onto St Sampson’s High School and Le Murier school.
Living Streets has been campaigning to secure a safe cross-country
route to the new schools for students coming from St Peter Port.
The pedestrian safety group’s secretary, Pat Wisher, said it was in negotiations with the landowner over right of way fees.
‘We need money to secure a temporary agreement,’ she said.
‘We also need money for fencing, in order to make the path safe for students and to protect the vinery.’
Mrs Wisher said she could not disclose a price for the temporary
agreement as the safety group was still in discussions with the vinery
owner.
‘But I can tell you that it will be in the thousands,’ she said.
She said the path was a unique opportunity to develop a cross-country route for walkers and cyclists.
‘We strongly believe that students should have the option of making their way to the new schools independently.
‘We are so close to achieving this and now we are appealing for financial support to make this happen.’
Living Streets has been campaigning for a traffic-free route to the new schools in Baubigny since 2007.
Earlier this year islanders joined the group to help find the quickest
route to the back of the building using the tracks from Pitronnerie
Road to The Bowl and the Bukit
Estate. Last month Living Streets, with support from the landowner, opened up the route for parents and students to see it.
Mrs Wisher said many coming from St Peter Port walk and cycle to school and the group wants them to be able to continue do so.
‘We know the school busses will be available, but we want to give the
students the choice of making their own way to school independently.’
Living Streets would like to hear from anybody who could provide
financial support to help the project. Contact Pat Wisher on 268088 for
more information.
Why should we give them any money after- all it was the states who decided to place the school there so let them sort out the access issues and what would be good is to compulsory purchase the original path which so happens goes pass a certain states members house.
What do you think ?
