"Ban sale of legal highs" UPDATE Empty "Ban sale of legal highs" UPDATE

Post by GD Wed 03 Sep 2008, 8:41 pm

A Jersey politician wants the sale of 'legal highs' banned.

A stall at Jersey Live this weekend sold substitutes for drugs like cocaine and cannabis.

Senator Jim Perchard says it's questionable whether this is legal in Jersey and he's asked the Health Department to look into it.

Several young people needed hospital treatment after taking a mixture of alcohol and 'Spice'.

Senator Perchard says it was grossly irresponsible to open such a store (from CIonline)

What is your view?

If it does the same as illegal stuff it should also be banned, I had an ex member of staff go really strange on Spice and it cost him his job in the end.

He now is off the stuff and seems to be doing OK where he is now

I agree BAN the stuff right now . What is wrong with the powers that be in these islands take the right step now make it illegal to be in possession of it , and stamp on those who supply it.

The fuss about Spice is silly as far as i can tell. looking at the ingredients, i can find nothing with notable pschoactive properties, just mainly marsh-mallow and wild lettuce. and anyway most of this is available online so a ban wouldn't really make much difference...

futuatcher, if these are the ingredients then surely the more experience cannabis user would most certainly know the difference and would not waste their time on using this rather healthy sounding high...........their street cred would be in shambles.........sorry more properties to it then lettuce and marsh-mallow........

The fact is not only are some people who use cannabis also using spice as a cheaper alternative at times but many more people who would not use cannabis because its illegal are using spice and it obviously has real affects on people as I have seen usually normal people acting very strange.

"Ban sale of legal highs" UPDATE Empty Re: "Ban sale of legal highs" UPDATE

Post by wayside Sat 06 Sep 2008, 1:31 am

getting a new law passed is almost impossible.

20 years ago I used to supply shops with things like Lemsip, Paracetamol etc we had been selleing them for years and then they stopped us because the Guernsey law was written years before and had a list of ingredients that were allowed to be sold in shops, if it was not on the list you could not sell it.

As Paracetamol, Ibuprofen etc was not invented when the list was done we had to stop selling anything with these things in, it even got stupid and we were stoped selling Lemon, Glycerin and Honey Cough Medicine because Lemon Oil was not on the list.

Lemon oil is OK in cakes, sweets in fact anything but as it was not on the medicines list we could not sell it.

The medical Officer at the time and various BOH people told me that it would take 2 or 3 years to get the law changed to bring it in line with the UK and it would be done as a matter of urgency as a shop could actually sell a pack of 10,000 Aspirins but not 24 Parecetamol, no Lemsip, or any Cough Remedies.

At the end of the day it should have been a simple enough thing just to say the law in Guernsey would be the same as the UK no complicated law to be written Just As the UK.

Here we are 20 years later and the law has still not been changed.

Copy and paste legislation isn't the answer, but it's a fact that it's been done in Jersey.

Read through the planning law and there's a section with a very odd sentence; if you google the odd sentence it turns out somebody literally copied and pasted from a section of a UK planning document (specific to Winchester I think) and accidentally copied the page number and footnote at the page break of the paragraph they copied![/off topic]

When it comes to medicine, Copy and Paste as you call it makes sence as small Islands could never afford to test these drugs, and surely a an up to date UK law has to be better than a 50 year old Guernsey law when we are talking about medicines that are changing weekly.

Shops and supermarkets are strictly regulated not only on what they can sell but the amounts in packs, here we have an outdated list with no restrictions on amounts.

Post by gsyguy Sat 06 Sep 2008, 3:28 pm

humm touchy subject eh, i know thise that do it and those that did,and each has a different story and experianace with it ,same could be the same with legal drugs as thats all it is at the end of the day,i know those that have a bad reaction with asprin,n if we go down the path of banning then shud we band glue? and other mind altering substances?or shud we do something different and take those people who do it and gve them a direction and meaning to thier lives and take away the monotamy of thier boring lives?
in other words take the Apathy out of Guernsey,it can be so friggin boring eh
last point if u take the Legal stuff away then ur be welcoming the Illegal which is best ? control or none?

A mum from Jersey who says her son's addicted to legal highs wants to warn other parents.

She told us her son's been smoking Spice for six months and it's ruining her family.

The woman - who doesn't want to reveal her identity - says other mums should look out for it.

Spice is a blend of herbs and plant extracts said to have similar effects to cannabis.

Users describe various effects from bad handovers and bad vision to paranoia and mood swings.

Director of Jersey's Alcohol and Drugs Service, Michael Gafoor says people should avoid using a substance that hasn't been fully tested.
