Wheelchair ramp plans for square
Wheelchair ramp plans for square | |
Proposals have been put forward to planners to make a Guernsey town square more accessible to wheelchair users. Constables in St Peter Port want to build a ramp in Town Church square leading up from outside the Albion. The project involves moving the water fountain currently next to the Town Church closer to the sea and creating a level access ramp behind it. It is hoped it will make it more user-friendly for not only disabled people, but also for people with pushchairs. The plans have been submitted to the Environment Department. (from BBC News) Its about time the States started thinking about the disabled access in town... |

I agree....
Its not until u are actually out and about with a disabled person ( or even with someone who has a slight walking disability) u realise that town doesn't cater for the disabled ...facilities are poor....

Re: Wheelchair ramp plans for square
After hearing this on the radio this morning i was looking at the date i was wondering if it was the start of April !
I am all for better wheelchair access in and around SPP but what i cannot understand is the way they are going about it .
Point one , to move an ancient water fountain a few feet and the immense cost involved ,not to mention all the granite ,concrete , etc and the safety railings (to protect the public from falling off the edge) . finding stone to match would be problematic to IMO.
Point two . Well call me a simpleton but would it not be much better to just fill in the first step (by the cosy) and incorporate a ramp which could extend as far as is needed. Or is that me just thinking again !

seems like honeypot and his bandits just want to waste money.i agree wheelchair access is sadly lacking in st peter port.what they should be looking at is lowering parts of the pavements to allow wheelchair users to mount them safely.they also need to look at the lack of access into most of the shops in town.as digger has said surely a ramp could be incorporated into the existing steps.do not move the fountain as it is a piece of guernsey history.might disappear like the trough in st sampsons
