Do you think we should have an extra day off?
Extra day off for Lib Day?
ISLANDERS could get an additional day off this year, if their employers agree to it.
Liberation Day falls on a Saturday, meaning that workers will not be entitled to an extra holiday as in previous years.
Some employees are opting to let their staff take a holiday.
Specsavers confirmed that its staff would be given an extra day to compensate for the loss of Liberation Day.
Employees have previously been given the opportunity to work on Liberation Day as it is not a holiday elsewhere.
Healthspan said it was still to make a decision.
The last time Liberation Day fell on a weekend was in 2004 when it was a Sunday.
A spokesman for the Chamber of Commerce said it would be meeting to discuss this and provide a recommendation to businesses.

Re: Extra day off for Lib Day?
I think the States in both Islands should make an official public holiday
Then businesses would have to give a day in lieu...

Re: Extra day off for Lib Day?
The thought is good (but I'll take the money please).... as I see it and it is my opinion only and I don't work - it must be remembered however that quite a large percentage of the working population are A. Not Guernsey, therefore Liberation Day is not really their 'celebration' B. A lot of the younger workers are far too young to remember, and therefore use the day only as an excuse to get wasted!!! and C. with the amount of English firms now in the Island - I cannot conceive that they would want to lose 'man hours' for a purely local celebration ....... especially in a recession (okay, I now know I have turned into my mother ....and yes my family were here for ther whole of the Occupation!!!

Re: Extra day off for Lib Day?
JERSEY EMPLOYERS are not required by law to give workers a day off in lieu of Liberation Day if they do not work on a Saturday, according to legal advice given to the States.
However, the law does say that if Islanders are expected to work on 9 May, they must be given an extra day’s holiday in lieu.
The news will disappoint more than 2,500 people across the Channel Islands who have signed an online petition on Facebook calling for a day off in lieu on Liberation Day.
Phil Wells, of the employee relations section of the Human Resources department, explained that Island law stated that Saturday was classed as a day of the working week, and therefore those working on it were entitled to a day to compensate.
However, Sunday is not counted as a day of the working week, and, as a result, can never be deemed a bank holiday under existing laws

Bid for extra liberation holiday
Nearly 2500 people from across the Channel Islands have joined an group calling for an extra Liberation Day holiday.[/b]
The national holiday on 9 May marks the liberation of the islands from Nazi occupation in World War II.
This year the anniversary falls on a Saturday and campaigners want a day off in lieu during the week.
But Jersey and Guernsey States have said there are no plans to arrange an alternative holiday.
It should be formalised as an official public holiday, whatever day it falls on
Martyn Le Vallee, campaigner.
Martyn Le Vallee, from Guernsey, who set up the website campaign, he said: "It's a national day of remembrance and celebration.
"I think really, for businesses as well, it should be formalised
so it is an official public holiday in the islands, whatever day it
falls on."
Under Jersey and Guernsey law, Saturday can be classed as a
weekday and will therefore count as a national holiday, even though
most people will already be off because it is the weekend.
Phil Wells, an employee relations officer from Jersey, said: "The legal opinion we have is that Saturday is a weekday.
"Next year Liberation Day falls on a Sunday, that won't be a public holiday, just a normal day."
The Channel Islands were the only part of the British Isles to fall into Nazi hands in World War II.
They were liberated in 1945.
Well said lets remember the liberation of our great islands , and the people who lived a hard life here and away.

It falls on a Saturday this year and a campaign is under way to ensure all people in the Channel Islands receive a day off during the week.
States staff who have to work on 9 May will be paid double time. Private sector firms will make their own decisions over the day off.
Chief Minister Senator Terry Le Sueur told the BBC the States wanted to set a good example as an employer.

Nice to know that while I'm working I'll be paying taxes to give States employees even more time off. Great.
