LANDSBANKI v LEGALISED ROBBERY!!!!!
I have read everything I could about the Landsbanki investors and I feel very sorry for them - Up until 2003 I worked for Cheshire Guernsey and shortly after I took early retirement Cheshire were taken over by Landsbanki - most of my customers were middle aged to elderly and were just trying to supplement their state pension and not be a burden. However, when I 'retired' I could not take my pension as at that stage I was too young (never to be said again) so the company I worked for sent my pension to a financial advisor (approved by the Income Tax Authourity), so that my pension could be invested in Norwich Union (before they pulled out of Guernsey) until I reached 'THE AGE' ....I had another amount, which my FI (first and last time I will have one of those) advised I put into a Norwich Union Bond, however the huge start up fee for this was to be taken over a period of 5 years, so taking any money before then would entail a hefty 'penalty'.....at that time I was also advised by said FI that I could add £6000 p.a. to my pension which I did for 3 years.........returning from Australia last April I was greeted by a letter from my FI asking me to go in and have a chat with him....also a letter from Norwich Union advising me that my investment had gone down to the tune of £14k. The meeting was to inform me that he (my FI) would monitor my Norwich Union Bonds and let me know if they needed to be removed, advising that there was a facility in place to do so without loss to myself. Last week I received notification from Norwich Union that my investment had now dropped £20K - so I went to see said FI......to tell him that I felt that at my age I should remove them as I do not have time on my side to 'wait it out', albeit with a small penalty (5 years in) and was told that he had had every intention of contacting me, as discussed in April, but I was last on his list, and by the time he thought of getting around to it Norwich Union had 'deferred payment' on all Bonds......meaning I cannot take my funds out and reinvest them in a bank of my choice as they are effectively frozen with no guarantee that they will not go down in value, or in fact that there will be anything left once 'unfrozen' - in fact no guarantee of anything at all! I am not the only one who has been affected by this - and effectively have no-one to turn to as it is apparentely entirely legal!!!! So what makes us, in this situation, so very different from the Landsbanki investors, who are at least free to fight their corner????? I thought as they did, that I was being sensible (with advice and at the onset no option!!!!) and would have sufficient funds to see me out without being a burden on the taxpayers of Guernsey!!!! Now I do not know where to turn or what to think!!!! P.S. I was informed in April, by my FI that the £6k per annum I was sending to Norwich Union was not benefitting me, it was in fact being offset by administration fees!!!! so I stopped............. RANT OVER :x
