Litter louts face fixed penalties
People found littering Guernsey could face on-the-spot fines under new laws planned for the Channel Island in the autumn.
The States approved a range of new fixed fines in 2006 but the Home Department has only just received the drafted laws.
It is hoped that they will go to the States for approval in September.
Under the drafted laws, anyone found leaving litter in Guernsey could face an on-the-spot fine of up to £70. (from BBC News)
About time this was done...

Yes I agree and we will probably find that 'litter louts' are not your normal run of the mill louts!!! I popped into the Co-op at the Longstore on Sunday to pick up my newspaper and came out behind a middle aged couple who had also been shopping - just outside the door of the Co-op the lady screwed up her receipt and quite deliberately dropped it on the ground....my flabber was totally ghasted!!!!!

Re: Litter louts face fixed penalties
By the time it registered they were across the crossing - but a fine would be better than me being and 'unpaid' policewoman........and they were at an age where they should know better and be teaching the younger generation better into the bargain!

Re: Litter louts face fixed penalties
ywa i understand ,but do we want to pay more folks to police this?
if islanders stood firm and said no litter and started to work together to make our island more tidy it would be a cheaper and make the island look so much better

Re: Litter louts face fixed penalties
Yes I agree there Kat - but I did all my protesting and marches pre pension age! Now I am handing it over to the up and coming generation - as my daughter says to me when I get upset about such things 'mum will it matter to you in a 100 years time? - if not just let it go' - I am far too long in the tooth to be confrontational with couples whilst out on a pleasant Sunday afternoon - so sorry it really is over to the 'Litter Police'... but more power to people who will confront people in those situations.....it's just not me any more!!!

Re: Litter louts face fixed penalties
they have litter police in places like edinburgh.something needs to be done but with the chance of the perpetrator becoming violent when confronted i dont feel it should be down to members of the public to confront people who litter

Re: Litter louts face fixed penalties
I can see it now..... A lazy lout is given a ticket, then tells the person giving it to them to (naughty words to go away) then crumples up the ticket and throws it on the ground.................. hmmmmmm!!
Good plan...............

It was in all the newpapers and on the news - so that puts everything reported into disrepute - if that is the case.....

There are enough people on the dole in Guernsey getting paid for doing nothing..........just a thought but why can't they work a few hours a day picking up litter?

Not so long back I was sat in the Crown bar with my wife and some friends and a woman sat across from us was smoking whilst talking to a fella, I just barely tolerate smoking but I do think it rude to keep dropping the ash from the fag on the floor as this woman was doing, so after some time I leaned across the table to her pushed her ashtray closer to her and said. "when the floor is full try using the ashtray" her face was a picture, she didn't say anything, and the floor must have been full cause she started using the ashtray. What made it better was I've always wanted to use that line, I know I'm sad and should get out more.

I meant the people who are ages and ages on the dole not even looking for work............may be after a period of time...say 4-6weeks?
silly question but how long can someone claim dole money in Guernsey? Is there a limit?

Re: Litter louts face fixed penalties
I'm not so much concerned about who picks it up and for what reason - what really bothers me is why people feel the need to drop litter in the first place! When we used to go on the beach all day in the summer (yes we did get days like that) come home time all kids were set to pick up every trace of us having been there - then an adult would go around and inspect to make sure all trace was gone.....I bought my kids up the same way and they are doing the same with theirs - so where is it going wrong???

Re: Litter louts face fixed penalties
Its going wrong because many of the offenders have absolutley no respect for anything, some dont even have respect for themselves.
It should be illegal to take glasses on the beach and if anyone sees a group of people leaving without clearing up there should be a hotline in place where people can phone with the area the rubbish is left and the registration numbers of the cars the offenders are in.
